Golf-ball sized hail, heavy rains and gusting winds sent Calgarians — including thousands of Stampede-goers — scurrying for cover as a summer storm shook the city.

Ominous clouds overtook Calgary around 1:30 p.m. yesterday, sending down sheets of hail and rain, causing widespread damage, including fallen branches, dented cars, smashed windshields and even the roof of the University of Calgary greenhouse was shattered.

Calgary Transit also reported via Twitter some storm-related delays, and Strathmore residents were told to find cover, as Environment Canada issued an alert via the public warning system warning of possible tornado activity.

Storm activity continued into last evening and more rain is expected today.
