A stray bullet hit a car with a man inside late Sunday night in Dartmouth.

The man heard gunshots while getting into his car on Louisbourg Lane at about 11:20 p.m., police said, adding he then heard something hit the front of his car.

He found a bullet hole in the hood of his car and a bullet on the ground nearby.

“I think the fact that his car was hit is completely random,” Const. Brian Palmeter, spokesman for Halifax Regional Police, said yesterday.

“It doesn’t appear at this point that it was aimed at anyone given that we believe that it was fired into the air,” Palmeter said.

But that doesn’t mean police won’t be investigating the incident, he said.

“It’s illegal; it’s an offence to fire off a gun into the air,” Palmeter said.

He said police are looking into whether the shots fired Sunday night are related to the recent shootings in the municipality, particularly in north end Halifax.

But first, they have to find out where the shots were fired, Palmeter said. “At this point we have very little information as to the origin of where the shot came from.”
