Street closures, transit reroutes challenge travel

Vancouver drivers and transit users struggled to get around the city yesterday after officials closed major roads and rerouted 18 bus routes in preparation for the Olympics.

In East Vancouver, Renfrew Street between Dundas and Hastings streets has been shut down because of its proximity to the Pacific Coliseum — which is an Olympic venue — leaving drivers with the task of finding alternate routes.

Around the Olympic Village, Midlothian Avenue between Ontario and Yukon streets and Ontario Street between East 29th and East 33rd avenues are now closed.

Downtown, the Robson and Cambie street buses have been rerouted, while many UBC-bound buses — including the 41, 43, 49 and 480 — will get to the bus loop via Marine Drive because Wesbrook Mall is closed.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better. The Dunsmuir and Georgia Viaducts are set to close on Friday.

Most of the closures remain in effect until March.
