Strike averted at Bombardier plant

Bombardier Inc. and the Canadian Auto Workers union reached a tentative three-year agreement yesterday, avoiding a strike at the company’s airplane plant in Toronto.

The CAW had warned that its members would walk out if a deal wasn’t reached by 10 a.m. yesterday but the two sides kept talking after the deadline passed and they reached an agreement several hours later.

The union said Bombardier Aerospace had been unsuccessful in its attempt to increase the number of temporary workers at the plant. Union officials also said they had maintained health-care benefits for current and future retirees.

A union spokesman said the agreement contains wage increases but he declined to disclose details.
