Students give back with doghouses

Students at M.E. LaZerte High School are giving back to the community with the Habitat for Hounds project.

The Pets and Animal Wellness Student Group, in conjunction with a school construction class, presented the Humane Animal Rescue Team (HART) with 12 doghouses yesterday. This donation was one project in the group’s campaign to raise awareness about animal compassion.
The hart organization is a not-for-profit organization that rescues stray or abandoned dogs and gives them medical attention. For HART president Wayne Tischer, the donation was akin to a gift.

“(The dogs) usually come in and they are hungry, they are sick, they are injured, and our medical costs are very high. This is just like an early Christmas present,” he said.

For Tischer, seeing such community awareness in young people is inspiring.

“To see it coming from people of this age, its unreal. It’s very, very reassuring for the youth of this area.”
