Tamil Protests have turned into a fad and a social event among many Tamil students in Toronto, a Scarborough teenager said yesterday.

Sashya Karunanayake, a 17-year-old L’Amoreaux Collegiate student from a Sinhalese Sri Lankan background, also described being harassed at a small counter-Tamil demonstration in Toronto Wednesday.

Tamil protesters “were threatening us and writing down our licence plate numbers,” said Karunanayake at a news conference organized by the Sri Lanka United National Association.

The association paid for the plane that circled Wednesday’s Tamil demonstration at the legislature with a banner trailing that read “Protect Canada Stop Tamil Tigers!” Another poster was hung on a bridge over the Don Valley Parkway. “Why can they protest and I don’t have a voice?” asked Karunanayake.
