Students sign up to remember Vimy

The 95th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge is more than a year away, but students and teachers from Ottawa are already planning to commemorate the occasion.

Tonight, the Canadian War Museum and EF Educational Tours will launch the Vimy Ridge 95th Anniversary National Student Remembrance Tour to be held on April 9, 2012.

Ian Lockhart, a Grade 12 student from John McCrae Secondary School, will be speaking about his tour in Holland for the 65th anniversary ceremonies celebrating the end of the Second World War.

The tour is an “emotional, eye-opening” experience, said Greg Owen, vice-president of EF Educational Tours.

“Students get a much deeper understanding of what actually took place,” he said.

For the 2012 tour, hundreds of Canadian students will travel to Europe and be assigned a soldier from the First or Second World War to study where they were from, where they fought, and where they died.
