Students, teachers remember Sun

The mother of a Vancouver ESL student who drowned at a Squamish-area lake visited a memorial for him at Bodwell High School yesterday.

Principal Stephen Smith said Hua Sun, the mother of Lian Dun (Edward) Sun, invited her son’s classmates to his funeral. “This is a very emotional time,” Smith said. “We have six grief counsellors, including Chinese-speaking counsellors, helping students and staff.”

Sun, 17, was found unconscious beneath a diving platform at Alice Lake on Saturday after attempting to swim from a raft just off shore. He had been part of a group of eight boys under the supervision of their hall adviser.

“He appeared to be a competent swimmer,” Smith said. No lifeguard was on duty.

Sun loved arts, sports and excelled in his studies, Smith said. He immigrated to Canada in 2009 and his mother was at his hospital bedside when he died.
