'Music Monday' was celebrated from coast to coast yesterday.
In Calgary, more than 100 students from several schools joined in with a string quartet from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
More than 1,000 schools and an estimated 850,000 students were expected to take part in the unique performance across Canada. The event began in 2005 as a way to demonstrate the importance of school music programs.
"There are many children across Canada who do not have an opportunity to have a musical education in their school, so we want to draw attention to how important music is to those kids and help them to reach their personal best," said Lyle Bennett, director of the Coalition for Music Education in Canada.
