Spend hours at the gym or pounding the sidewalk in a bid to shed some of those excess pounds? Bad news — you’re probably wasting your time, according to new research. Exercise has little effect on weight loss — it’s all about the amount you eat, according to The Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit organization.
In fact, researchers say, people who simply control their eating can lose more weight than those who work out constantly. Even worse: Those for whom exercise is a daily routine often gain weight, as their bodies prompt them to consume calories to make up for fuel lost during exercise.

The Mayo Clinic said that studies “have demonstrated no or modest weight loss with exercise alone” and that “an exercise regimen ... is unlikely to result in short-term weight loss beyond what is achieved with dietary change.”
Medics say exercise plays a marginal role in helping someone lose weight — but only above and beyond what they would lose by simply controlling calories.
“You have to do an awful lot more exercise than most people realize,”?said researcher Susan Jebb. “To burn off an extra 500 calories is typically an extra two hours of cycling ... about two doughnuts.”
Kick the heels: It’s no use
