Study finds multiple sclerosis symptoms worse in spring, summer

Here is an intriguing finding about multiple sclerosis. The disease seems to flare up in the spring and summer. Researchers found in brain scans that MS activity increased during the months of March through August.

MS is a disease of the central nervous system that can cause loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue and double vision.

The new study, which was conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, is important because many clinical trials are only six months long. When researchers study the effect of various drugs on the disease, it could appear that the drug is working well when in fact the change of season accounts for the improvement. The study was published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
