Steve Sumarah got the better of Blake Nill this time.

The Saint Mary’s Huskies head coach won the Frank Tindall trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport football coach of the year at an awards banquet on Friday, edging out Nill of the Calgary Dinos, Glen Constantin of the Laval Rouge et Or and Gary Jeffries of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Sumarah, in his fourth year at the Saint Mary’s helm since taking over from Nill in 2006, becomes the third Huskies head coach to win the award, joining Nill and Larry Uteck.

The Huskies lost to Nill’s Dinos in the Uteck Bowl two weeks ago.

Sumarah guided the Huskies to a 7-1 record and their third straight Atlantic University Sport championship. They led the AUS in points scored (266) and allowed (119).

It is Sumarah’s 12th year on the Saint Mary’s coaching staff, a stint that saw him win two Vanier Cups.
