Suncor showed off the first reclaimed surface tailings pond in Canada at a site north of Fort McMurray on Thursday.

The company called it an industry milestone, and showed off 225 hectares of land featuring 600,000 newly planted trees and a fresh-water pond in front of a crowd of officials, including Premier Ed Stelmach.

“It’s not only good for the company but it’s good for oilsands development, good for the region, good for the province and most importantly for the country of Canada,” he said.

The site was from the company’s first tailings pond, opened in 1967.
