Suspicious blaze engulfs Sikh school

Firefighters were called to the 5900 block of Prince Albert Street Thursday morning to battle a suspicious blaze that consumed the Khalsa School in East Vancouver.

According to various reports, while the damage to the school was significant, firefighters were able to recover a sacred scripture from one of the burned buildings and return it to school officials.

Investigators are considering the possibility that the fire was intentional.

“Once the fire was out the investigators went in and determined it was suspicious so (the VPD) arson squad headed up to liaise with the fire investigator and we’ve taken over the file,” said Const. Jana McGuinness, a Vancouver police spokesperson.

All summer school courses that were being held have been cancelled and fall classes could be affected as well. The land that the Sikh school was situated on belongs to the Vancouver School Board.
