Sutter brings in brother as Flames’ new bench boss

The Calgary Flames hope to turn one of the worst-kept secrets into the best off-season coaching acquisition.

As expected, the Flames held a press conference at the Pengrowth Saddledome yesterday to introduce Brent Sutter as the team’s newest head coach.

“I’m very excited with our staff,” said Sutter, who will also be joined behind the bench by assistant coaches Ryan McGill, Dave Lowry and Jamie McLennan. “Our job is to give the players an environment that they have the opportunity to succeed in.”

Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said he was pleased to be able to hire his younger brother as Calgary’s new bench boss. “To me it’s a big day to be able to get who I think is the best free agent head coach out there,” said Darryl. “All four of the guys here, I coached them all and they’re all very strong guys in the locker room and they’re very great team players.”
