Switching up your decor for the fall season

As the season changes from summer to fall with the days getting shorter and the weather getting cooler, we naturally start spending more time indoors, and the urge to create a warm and cosy atmosphere at home instinctively kicks in for many people. So how can you add a dose of autumn to your home?

Decorator, stylist and host of HGTV’s Pure Design, Samantha Pynn, says the quickest way to inject that fall feeling into your home is by switching up decor accessories just as you switch up your wardrobe from summer to fall.

“Think about vases filled with autumnal coloured florals, a giant wood bowl laid on a coffee table, a chunky knit throw on the sofa, giant potted mums at the front door and cosy new bed linen,” she says.

As for a colour palette, adding warmer, richer colours — deep reds, burnt oranges, golds, browns and mochas — like those outside, signify that fall has arrived. The same goes for fabrics. Opt for lusher, plusher and warmer throws, pillows and linens.

According to Samantha, come autumn, the key to decorating is to pack away anything that feels cool and summery. “Put away the summer patio trays and drinking pitchers, pull out the soup tureen, the warm duvet, blankets and throws,” she says.

The Fall Home Show runs from this weekend at The Better Living Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto.
