Tax the rich, author says

There are more than 1,000 billionaires in the world and many of them are true troublemakers, according to Linda McQuaig, co-author of the new book, The Trouble with Billionaires.

The book dives into the corporate lives of billionaires like Bill Gates and how they circumvent paying enough taxes on their incredible wealth.

Speaking in downtown Ottawa yesterday, McQuaig said she doesn’t buy into the notion that large donations from these individuals really benefit society.

Canada has also seen wealthy donations from the country’s rich and famous. Peter Munk, founder of Barrick Gold, donated $35 million to the University of Toronto to form the Munk School of Global Affairs, for which he will receive a $16-million tax reduction.

“He is shaping what students at U of T will be learning. I find that very intrusive, controlling, and not very democratic,” said McQuaig.
