A substitute teacher who has worked at 43 schools in and around Coquitlam is facing nine sex-related charges after three girls in Grade 3 reported being inappropriately touched, RCMP said yesterday.

Cpl. Bert Paquet said an investigation was started on March 10 after parents called to report their daughter was touched by her substitute teacher.

On that same day officers learned that two other girls from the same Grade 3 class had made similar allegations. All three victims were between seven and eight years old and all of the alleged incidents happened on school property.

Mounties contacted administrators at School District 43, which includes Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and the villages of Anmore and Belcarra, who suspended the suspect.

Aleksandr Vladimirovich Plehanov, known as Mr. P to his students, was arrested March 18 at his Burnaby home. He taught at elementary, middle and high schools between Jan. 31, 2007 and March 15, 2010.

Paquet said Mounties are appealing to the public for help by releasing information on the case.

“Our investigators have reason to believe that there may be more victims and/or witnesses,” Paquet said in a release.

Parents trying to determine if their child was in a class taught by the suspect should contact the school directly, Paquet added.

Parents who believe their child may have been victimized or are witness to an incident involving the suspect are asked to call the RCMP at 604-552-7335.
