While Sept. 4 may be the first official day of school for Ottawa students, many of their teachers have been coming to class earlier to get a jump on the school year ahead.
“You need to come in a few days early just to help change gears,” said Jeff Fritzlan, who teaches construction at Woodroffe High School.
Fritzlan, who has been teaching for 10 years, said teachers can’t avoid thinking about classes during the last couple weeks of August.
Toward the end of the nearly two-month summer vacation, Jeff Prentice, who has been a teacher for three years at Woodroffe High School, said he starts craving the energy students bring to school.
“When you see last year’s Grade 9 kids returning for Grade 10, they’re excited to be back,” he said. “They have so much confidence, when the year before they were scared and nervous. It’s a really neat energy.”
