The contract is up for public school teachers and the union and the province started negotiations yesterday.
The Nova Scotia Teachers Union said the current contract expired on July 31.
Education Minister Marilyn More and NSTU president Alexis Allen said in a statement they are optimistic “the talks would produce an agreement in the best interest of public education in Nova Scotia.”
The majority of the province’s 10,000 school teachers voted online in February 2009 in favour of a deal that gave them a 2.9 per cent salary increase.
