Teen charged in mall stabbing

Police have charged a 16-year-old Calgarian with attempted murder after a stabbing at a strip mall in the city’s northeast last week.

Police have charged a 16-year-old Calgarian with attempted murder after a stabbing at a strip mall in the city’s northeast last week.

Acting staff Sgt. Carl Verge said police found a 20-year-old victim suffering from multiple stab wounds at the Village Square Shopping Centre last Tuesday. The victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

“This was not random, and the victim and the suspect both know each other. We believe this was a disagreement that escalated,” Verge said.

“They casually know each other, it was sort of a meeting and it escalated from there. I can’t speculate what the disagreement was about.”

The suspect turned himself into police on May 13 with his parents after police went to his home earlier in the day to question him, Verge added.

Verge said both the suspect and the victim are known to police.

The suspect, who cannot be named, will appear in court today to face charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and being at large. Further charges are pending.
