Teen driver dead, passenger hurt, four arrested after car hits post

An 18-year-old driver is dead and his passenger injured after the car he was driving struck a light post, causing it to fall on his vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics received a call of a single-vehicle collision at Claridge Drive in Barrhaven at around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Ottawa paramedic spokesman J.P. Trottier.

Paramedics found two men in a silver Honda.

“The driver was pinned by the damage to his vehicle, and as well, a cement post had fallen on the driver’s side,” said Trottier.

The driver had some vital signs at the scene, Trottier said. Firefighters worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle. He was declared deceased 15 minutes after paramedic arrival.

Paramedics treated the passenger of the Honda for a head injury and a fractured wrist. He is in stable condition in hospital.

Ottawa police arrested four people, who were travelling in a red Mustang, at the scene, said Const. Katherine Larouche. No charges have been laid.

Larouche said investigators are looking into “every angle” involving the collision.
