Teen’s disappearance the latest in rash of B.C. boating mishaps

Mounties in Mission resumed their search yesterday morning for a 16-year-old girl who disappeared into Hatzic Lake on Sunday after falling off the bow of a speedboat.

She was not wearing a life preserver.

The teen’s disappearance is one of four serious boating incidents around B.C. over the last two weeks.

Ten days ago, a collision between a speedboat and a houseboat on Shuswap Lake resulted in one death and several injuries.

A 50-year-old man is still missing in Harrison Lake, near Agassiz, after his boat capsized on Friday. The man’s son, who was also onboard, managed to swim to safety. And Roland Compton, 69, of Chemainus, vanished on Saturday from the Alberni Inlet.

“What’s most important is that (recreational boaters) are always aware of the dangers on the water, and that they always wear a life jacket,” said Sgt. Miriam Dickson of the Mission RCMP.
