Ottawa police are crediting the friends of a 17-year-old Quebec boy with saving his life after a near drowning in the Rideau River yesterday morning.
The teen and his friends were swimming by North River Road near Vanier when the boy went under. When police arrived after an emergency call at 11:27 a.m., the boy’s friends had already pulled him from the water.
“When police arrived, his friends were attempting to do CPR,” said Ottawa Police Constable Isabelle Lemieux.
The boy had no pulse, Lemieux said. “We took over and used a defibrillator and continued CPR. After that, he showed vital signs,” she said.
Ottawa paramedics arrived and took over at that point, Lemieux said.
The boy was taken to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
