Terrace Mountain fire now half contained

The Terrace Mountain wildfire near Kelowna, which spans about 4,500 hectares, is 50 per cent contained.

About 1,000 people are still under evacuation orders, and another 1,200 people who returned home Saturday remain on short-notice evacuation alert as firefighters continue battling the blaze, which burns despite heavy rain on Saturday night.

Earlier on Saturday, a water bomber assisting with the fire-fighting effort crashed into Okanagan Lake. The pilot was rescued by an RCMP boat and suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses told reporters that the bomber’s landing gear was down as it attempted to gather water from the lake.

More than 300 firefighters, 89 pieces of heavy equipment and 16 helicopters are battling the Terrace Mountain fire.
