OTTAWA - Travel by U.S. residents to Canada reached 1.7 million trips in July, up 2.3 per cent from the previous month.

Statistics Canada reports residents of the United States made a million overnight trips to Canada in July, 2.9 per cent more than in June.

Americans also made 615,000 same-day car trips to Canada, up 1.2 per cent.

Travel by residents of overseas countries dropped 1.3 per cent to 369,000 trips in July as seven of the top 12 countries posted declines.

Overall, travel to Canada by foreign residents rose 1.6 per cent to 2.1 million trips in July.

Canadian residents took 4.5 million trips abroad in July, up 2.5 per cent, while the number of trips by Canadians to the United States rose three per cent to 3.8 million.

Travel by Canadians to overseas destinations increased 0.3 per cent to 732,000 trips in July.
