‘The best city in the world’

She left Vancouver for the City of Angels 12 years ago, but there’s no mistaking where actress Emmanuelle Vaugier calls home.

“My base is in Vancouver; my friends and family are there,” said Vaugier, who plays Mia on the sitcom Two and a Half Men and Det. Jessica Angell on CSI: NY. “That’s something that you can’t really replace when you move to a new city.”

Vaugier was born in Vancouver and raised in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood. She acted in school plays while attending Crofton House and Magee Secondary and dabbled in modelling before landing commercials and the lead in a made-for-TV movie.

A colleague introduced her to her manager in Los Angeles, and Vaugier moved there in 1997.

While she loves the shopping, the plentiful dining options and year-round sunshine in the Golden State, the 33-year-old said some of her fondest memories are of summertime in her hometown, going out to eat with friends or trekking up to Whistler.

“There is no city more beautiful than Vancouver when it’s not raining and it’s nice and sunny and warm,” she said. “It’s the best city in the world.”

She said she’s also fond of the cultural diversity that has come to exemplify Canada as a whole and the fact that the country offers a range of rural life and city life.
