It’s been two weeks since the Las Vegas mass shooting and we still know little about Stephen Paddock and his girlfriend Marilou Danley.
Danley was put on a U.S. government watch list last week and has been designated a Transportation Security Administration selectee. Danley, who frequently travels outside of the United States, will be under watch if she attempts to board any commercial flight going forward. TSA officers will be allowed to aggressively search her luggage and question her.
ABC News reported that Danley’s “relationship with Paddock changed over time, evolving from intimate companion to more of a caretaker for him.”
“Caretaker” may be a bit strong as Danley frequently traveled outside of the country and there are conflicting reports about whether or not Danley believed Paddock had mental issues.
NBC News reported that two former FBI officials said that Danley believed Paddock had displayed “mental health symptoms” and that he would lie in bed and scream, “Oh my God!”
However, a Las Vegas Review-Journal report from Oct. 10 said: “Contrary to published reports, Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, told investigators in Los Angeles she had no concerns about [Paddock’s] mental health.”
Many conspiracy theories involving Danley have emerged over the last 14 days, including some which claim she was actually present in Las Vegas the night of the attacks.
“Investigative journalist” Laura Loomer tweeted out an alleged valet receipt for Paddock’s van on Oct. 1, 2017 and it was in the name of Marilou Danley. Loomer's credibility hasn't been too high since she rushed onstage during "Shakespeare in the Park" in Central Park in 2016.
There has also been little evidence unearthed by credible sources to support the online theory that Danley was a CIA operative at one point in her life.
All that said, deputy director of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center Philip Mudd has expressed high doubt that Danley knew nothing about Paddock’s intentions in Las Vegas.
