The Bucket List role places actor by Oscar winners
The new film The Bucket List is a pairing of acting royalty as Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play a couple of terminally ill men who take off on the ultimate road trip before they meet their maker.
Sharing screen time with the multiple-time Oscar winners — and holding his own in impressive fashion — is Sean Hayes, the Emmy-award winning former star of Will & Grace, who admitted he was blown away to have this opportunity.
“At the table read (before filming), just to see my placard where it says ‘Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes’ next to each other, I thought ‘that just doesn’t look right,’ ” Hayes said recently in Beverly Hills. “But the moment that I saw that was kind of like a dream come true.”
While he said his initial feelings after being cast as Thomas, the sardonic assistant to Nicholson’s corporate billionaire, Edward Cole, were “complete and utter fear, total unworthiness and all those actor feelings and insecurities,” Hayes said he quickly found a comfort level.
“Once you get on the set it’s fun and you’re actor to actor and he (Jack) makes you feel very at home and at ease, so it was nice,” he said.
While he speaks well of his time playing Jack McFarland on Will & Grace, Hayes said he’s excited to be moving on and working on such interesting and demanding projects.
“The goal probably for any actor is to challenge yourself and not take the easy road,” he said. “It’d be easy for me to go off and do another sitcom — as a CBS executive said ‘we’ll buy a show over the phone with Sean’ — but that’s too easy.
“I’m here to live my life, which means challenging myself, and that’s what I plan on doing.”
The Bucket List opens on Tuesday.
