It wasn’t a bad day for a swim — just a very, very long one.

Toronto Star designer Miguel Vadillo, 40, finished his swim across Lake Ontario and touched land at Toronto’s Marilyn Bell Park just after 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The grueling journey took 18 hours and four minutes — one hour ahead of schedule.

Santiago,Vadillo’s son, said the mood of the 21-man crew was lively after the sun came up yesterday.

“There was a really good energy, but it’s not party — we’re working here,” he said.

Vadillo is swimming for Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart charity and hopes to raise enough money to send 300 kids to courses that will equip them with basic swimming and water-safety skills.
