For homeowners, granite is a favourite for countertops, flooring, backsplashes and fireplace hearths. However, there is a difference between natural granite — made from an actual slab of natural stone — and composite granite materials. Composites include a combination of natural and manmade material and that gives them an edge over natural stone when it comes to durability, performance and hygiene.
Popular on the market today are kitchen sinks made of “granite composite” material. Canada’s leading brand is Silgranit, made by German sink manufacturer Blanco. Made of 80 per cent natural granite, Silgranit also has a patented formulation of acrylic and ceramic microbeads that make it non-porous, scratch-proof and stain resistant. The sinks come in seven natural colours and the company makes matching coloured faucets for easy coordination.
“Silgranit is a patented material that is unique in the marketplace and so durable, it can last the lifetime of a person’s home without chipping or scratching,” says Alexandra Marshall, marketing director with Blanco. “Both our formulation and manufacturing process is patented so there is nothing else out there that is comparable in terms of performance.”
This also makes it far more durable than the more common stainless steel sink, which can scratch, and also more durable than other sink materials like cast iron or acrylic. It is also hygienic and approved to food-safety regulations. Unlike natural granite used for countertops, bacteria cannot grow on its surface.
