Thirty people became Canadian citizens yesterday morning in a very Canadian place: The Maple Leafs dressing room at the Air Canada Centre.
The decision to hold the ceremony in the space usually reserved for Phil Kessel, Kris Versteeg and Dion Phaneuf has been in the works for a number of months.
The participants were chosen randomly, not for their love of the team.
“Hopefully, when we’re done with them, they will be (fans),” said Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment executive Tom Anselmi.
The unorthodox location was used to bring attention to Citizenship Week, which runs Oct. 18 to 24.
