As many as three dozen elementary school students are being treated for cuts and bruises after a bad accident in Calgary between their bus and a minivan.

Insp. Curtis Olson said police received a call around 8:15 a.m. about a collision between the two.

The bus appears to have jumped the curb and smashed into a tree in front of a house in the city's northwest.

Homeowner Marilyn Gunn says she heard a loud bang and ran to see what had happened.

She says she and a neighbour managed to help the screaming children out of the smashed-up bus.

Both drivers were seriously injured, but are stable in hospital.
