Halifax firefighters are investigating an early morning fire yesterday at a Fairview residence.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service spokesman Capt. Dave Meldrum said they were called to a blaze at 189 Melrose Ave. at 3:22 a.m. yesterday after callers reported seeing a fire on the outside of building.

Three family members inside escaped unharmed along with their pets.

“There was fire both on the exterior and some fire inside the building as well – up in the attic,” Meldrum said.

He also said four fire trucks and a tactical support unit responded to the blaze that was extinguished in about an hour. The cause remains under investigation.
