Throw up your hair and strut!

Let us count the ways we love the topknot: It takes 2.5 seconds to create. The style works with just about any outfit, from maxi skirts to cutoff shorts. And (our favorite), the ’do works better with dirty summer hair.

But there’s a fine line between a fashion-forward topknot and gym hair. According to Tony Kelley, senior stylist at Cutler Salons, it’s all about making the style look deliberate. “It has to look like there was some intent behind it — the knot has to be really twisted in a way that’s beautiful or something that it doesn’t look like a ponytail that’s folded over,” he says.

All about texture

Dirty hair? No time to blow dry? No problem: “With a few tweaks it can be a great look that works really well with natural texture. You don’t have to blow out your hair. The more texture you have in your hair, the more grease or product is in there, [the better] to just throw it up,” Kelley tells us.
