TIFF Film review: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

German arthouse eccentric Werner Herzog gives Nicolas Cage his best role since Wild at Heart

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Rating:
****

German arthouse eccentric Werner Herzog gives Nicolas Cage his best role since Wild at Heart in this gloriously unhinged, in-name only remake of the Abel Ferrara/Harvey Keitel cop shocker. Cage plays a hunched, strung-out Louisiana lieutenant who has his twitchy fingers in all manner of dirty pies. A remarkably deranged, blackly comic trip into lunacy that’s not for all tastes.
