Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
Rating: * 1/2
A fact-based account of Job-like misery as experienced by a teenage girl in late ’80s Harlem, Precious is surely harrowing stuff, although the discomfort has as much to do with director Lee Daniels’ treatment of the story as its contents.
A shameless manipulator with no regard for subtlety, Daniels deploys an unholy array of shock tactics and “inspirational” clichés, undermining some fine acting by Mo’Nique (as the protagonist’s monstrous mother) and ultimately failing his delicate source material.
