Bruce McDonald’s latest is a rock n’ roll variation on A Dinner With Andre that’s somehow more entertaining and insightful than that description suggests. Two former bandmates meet up for a dinner and concert, chatting away about their lives, music, death, and inevitably their long-standing troubles with drugs and alcohol. The central performances by Molly Parker and the late Tracy Wright — for whom Trigger, in an extraordinary swansong — are remarkable, keeping the film constantly engaging when they are often the only people onscreen. It’s one of the strongest and most perceptive movies McDonald has ever made, thanks in no small part to a stellar script from Daniel MacIvor.
