Timing key with trade centre

The current trade centre is on the table during negotiations between the Halifax Regional Municipality and the province on funding a new facility.

And Premier Darrell Dexter said the sale of the current facility must be finalized by the time negotiations on the new facility conclude.

“We want the transfer of that building, just like the (proposed new) convention centre, to be a success for the people of Halifax,” Dexter said.

“Its disposition has to be concluded concurrent with the conclusion of the negotiations.

“We wouldn’t sign off one without having the other one ready to be signed off.”

The province owns the current convention centre, located across from city hall on Argyle Street.

The municipality owns the Metro Centre, which is attached to the convention centre.

Last week, Dexter said the province is interested in some municipally owned land, suggesting a land swap may be in the works.

He refused to specify which land the province is considering.

Staff will present Halifax regional council with a report Tuesday outlining funding options for the proposed trade centre project.
