Tougher DUI laws in effect

Nova Scotia drivers who blow just under the legal limit behind the wheel will now lose their licence for a week, up from a 24-hour suspension, as tougher provincial laws went into effect yesterday.

A second offence showing a blood-alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.08 earns a 15-day suspension, and a third earns 30 days plus a $89.63 licence-recovery fee.

The criminal code applies to levels of 0.08 and above.

“This is just another tool we can use to keep individuals off the roads who might be drinking,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin.
