Tourism up by 30,000 visitors over start of ’09

The province has welcomed more than 30,000 visitors during the first half of 2010, compared with the same period in 2009.

The province released its June tourism statistics on Thursday, showing a four per cent increase in visitor traffic for the month compared to the previous year.

There is also a four per cent increase for 2010 — an overall increase of 32,640 visitors.

Room nights are up six per cent for June and three per cent for the year.

Domestic travel is up four per cent overall, with an 11 per cent decrease from Western Canada the lone blemish.

Minister of Tourism Percy Paris called the overall figures “a good start to the tourism season,” but pointed out the numbers for July and August will give the province a better sense for the year as a whole.

Surpassing the tourism numbers for July and August of 2009 will be tough as Halifax played host to several major events last summer, including the Tall Ships Festival and outdoor concerts featuring Paul McCartney and Kiss.
