Mourners place flowers on McCowan Road, south of Eglinton Avenue East, where Yan Zhang, 36, and her three-year-old son were struck by a driver Wednesday night. Zhang died at the scene. Her son remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A young mother walking her three-year-old home after playing with him in a neighbourhood park was dragged 30 metres under Dragan Gorgijevski’s van before her body came to a rest on McCowan Road, police say.
The little boy, grievously injured when the van mounted the sidewalk and swept the two away, remains in critical condition with brain, leg and other injuries. Gorgijevski, 56, remains in custody as he awaits his bail hearing on charges, including impaired driving causing death.
Yan Zhang, 36, had been flying a kite with her son just before the two were struck by the van Wednesday night.
After hours of sitting by his son’s critical care unit bed in Sick Kids hospital, where the youngster clung to life yesterday, Zhang’s husband was faced with the grim task of identifying his wife’s body. “He’s in shock,” Toronto police Det. Paul Lobsinger said.
Lobsinger was visibly shaken at a news conference yesterday while speaking about the three-year-old boy, who has a severe brain injury and crushed legs.
“Would you like to face the father who is now at the hospital with his young child and tell them that you’re sorry for what’s happened? How far will sorry go?”
