A transit police officer was injured while she and three colleagues scuffled with a man resisting arrest at MetroTown SkyTrain station, TransLink said yesterday.
The transit officers approached a man Sunday evening while checking fares. He allegedly gave them a false name. When officers attempt to arrest him for obstruction, the man resisted, Insp. David Hansen said in a release.
“The three Transit Police officers (were) violently pushed down a concrete stairwell by the out-of-control assailant,” Hansen said.
The female officer tumbled 15 steps sustaining head, knee, hip and elbow injuries.
One of the other officers suffered a cut and scrapes.
The third officer was uninjured. Both were able to subdue the suspect and complete the arrest.
The injured officer was transported to Burnaby General Hospital by B.C. Ambulance. She was later released and is now recovering at home.
Officers are recommending charges of obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and assault of police officers causing bodily harm.
Hansen said fare checks often lead to further investigations.
“When someone fails to provide proof of their identity or gives a false identity, the situation can often escalate to a more serious level, especially when we encounter violent people,” he added.
