Transit plan set to raise prices

Gas prices in the Lower Mainland will increase by three cents per litrenext year after a council of local mayors approved a $130-millionsupplemental transit plan.

Gas prices in the Lower Mainland will increase by three cents per litre next year after a council of local mayors approved a $130-million supplemental transit plan.

The decision, which will also result in an increase in the price of monthly transit passes and FareSaver tickets, maintains road and transit operations at current levels.

The level of funding does not allow further expansion of the system, including the Evergreen Line.

The Mayor’s Council was considering several funding options. TransLink revealed that growing operating costs would have exhausted TransLink’s financial reserves by 2012 and resulted in a $150-million annual budget deficit.

TransLink’s board has been asked to prepare a new supplement plan within the next six to nine months to establish a framework for system expansion.
