Taking public transit may help people keep fit, says a new study by University of B.C. researchers.

Transit riders are three times more likely to meet the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation’s suggested daily minimum of physical activity, researchers found. Trips by bus and the SkyTrain often involve walking to and from stops, meaning transit users are more likely to meet the recommended 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day, five days a week.

Lawrence Frank, co-author of the study, said the idea of needing to go to the gym is a misperception.
