Treatment gives hope to kids

The Alberta Children’s Hospital has found success in a procedure that lets kids with scoliosis be kids again.

The Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib system attaches a titanium rod to the patient’s ribs and spine to allow proper growth.

Dr. David Parsons, an orthopedic surgeon, says it offers children with a specialized need a chance to grow and live an active life.

“This special apparatus allows children to lead an almost normal lifestyle,” he said.

Cathy Bartsch says this procedure has kept her son moving and out of a wheelchair.

“It’s good seeing your kid just being a kid,” she said.
