The Montreal Alouettes will have their management team back after all.
The CFL team learned Wednesday that head coach Marc Trestman wouldn’t be heading to the Indianapolis Colts to fill their vacant head coaching position. That job instead went to Baltimore Ravens defensive co-ordinator Chuck Pagano.
But ESPN reported earlier this week Trestman had spoken to the Colts over the weekend about the position.
Earlier this month, Alouettes GM Jim Popp was among the candidates the Colts interviewed for their general manager’s job before eventually hiring Ryan Grigson from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Indianapolis was in the market for a new head coach after Jim Caldwell was fired Jan. 17. The Colts posted a dismal 2-14 record this season as star quarterback Peyton Manning was unable to play due to neck surgery.
Trestman is under contract with the Alouettes through the 2012 season and is reportedly seeking an extension with the CFL club. He and Popp were both in Mobile, Ala., this week to scout at the Senior Bowl, but both have since left.
Popp said he has not talked to Trestman about a contract extension but said the coach may have spoken to owner Robert Wetenhall about it.
“I do know that Marc would like to have another contract for a longer period of time,” Popp said. “I can’t confirm we’ve negotiated for that.”
Trestman has been Montreal’s head coach the past four seasons, leading the club to a pair of Grey Cup titles.
He spent much of the week looking to replace four assistant coaches who left after last season.
Popp did announce the signing of veteran safety Etienne Boulay and import receiver Adam Mims to two-year contracts Wednesday.
Boulay, entering his seventh CFL season, missed all but four games in 2011 with a concussion.
“The doctors have cleared him,” said Popp. “He felt better toward the end of the season but we felt it was best if he didn’t finish so he’d be ready when camp opens.”
Mims is a five-foot-eight, 195-pound receiver from Furman University who can also return kicks. Popp said he tried to sign him last year, but Mims opted to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers camp.
“He’s built strong,” said Popp. “He’s extremely explosive, with great speed and quickness.”
