Trio of Rainmen enter slam-dunk competition

On several occasions this year, Jevohn Shepherd has left Halifax Rainmen fans awe-struck after his gravity-defying dunks.

The six-foot-five small forward will get one more chance to bring the roof down when he participates in the slam-dunk contest on Saturday at the Metro Centre as part of the Premier Basketball League’s all-star weekend.

Shepherd, who is not an all-star, has been granted access to the contest and will be joined by teammates Eric Crookshank, a six-foot-eight power forward, and Gary Ervin, a six-foot point guard who is a surprise entry.

Participants from other teams have yet to be announced for the 7:15 p.m. contest.

Shepherd, a Toronto native who spent four years in the NCAA with the Michigan Wolverines, averaged 8.1 points in 12 games this season.

Crookshank, Ervin, small forward Desmond Ferguson and Eric Gilchrese are the Rainmen’s all-stars. Gilchrese, an injury replacement for teammate Tony Bennett, and Ferguson will compete in Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. three-point contest.

The all-star game is Sunday at 3 p.m.
