A business conversation between two men or a lovers’ quarrel?
An iconic Calgary statue on Stephen Avenue is up for artistic debate as part of a Calgary Outlink project in the city that armed seven gay and lesbian youth from Inside Out Youth group with cameras to take photos of their everyday lives and interpretation of everyday things.
“That statue shows a conversation but when you look at it from a certain angle, it does kind of look like something more is going on,” participant Jasmine Ing, 23, explains.
“It’s interesting, it probably didn’t appear that way when it was made, but maybe it was an underlying tone. But that’s the different perspective.”
That statue is just one of 25 photographs that will be featured at the unveiling of the project dubbed (eye)dentities.
The event kicks off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at the Calgary Outdoor Council, with the participants ranging from 18 to 25 years old.
“It was a fun project. It gave us a chance to take photos and talk about our interpretation and the meaning to the LGBTQ community.”
Melissa Luhtanen, president of the Calgary Outlink, said the project is a good way to open eyes and minds.
“It’s another way to look at things from a different perspective, and especially with the younger groups there isn’t as much homophobia,” she said.
