Twenty new hospice beds opened yesterday at the Peter Lougheed Centre as part of a strategy to increase patient support.

Alberta Health Services opened the hospice unit to assist terminally ill patients and their families.

Along with the hospice beds, the Peter Lougheed Centre is also opening a 32-bed transition unit, which AHS said will ensure patients are in the right place rather than occupying acute-care beds.

In total, AHS will be opening 360 additional beds throughout Alberta, which will be in use by March 2011.
